Visiting family and friends abroad

Families visiting friends and relatives abroad are a high-risk group for acquiring imported infections such as malaria. Most of our infectious diseases admissions are families visiting friends and relatives who have not taken any form of prophylaxis or vaccinations. We hope to increase awareness in this group and reduce their risk of acquiring serious life-threatening infections.

Travelling children need advice specific to the age group for example, some anti-malarials are not appropriate for young children. Pregnant mothers also need specialist advice especially if they are travelling to countries with malaria. Such complex patients are often referred to us for specialist advice and so we have already established a reputation for our specialist skills and expertise.
