Anti-malarial medications

Malaria is a parasitic infection found in a wide range of tropical countries. It is spread by the bite of the Anopheles mosquito (see picture right). Left untreated it is a serious, life-threatening illness. It may present with a multitude of symptoms but fever is the most common feature. More than 1000 cases were imported into the UK last year, with some fatalities.

Malaria should be suspected in anyone returning from a malarious country with fever (see map below). If you suspect you may have malaria, you will need to seek urgent medical advice and a malaria blood test read more

However, malaria may be prevented by taking anti-malarial prophylaxis (preventative tablets) before, during and after returning from travel.

The following are commonly used medicines to prevent malaria:

  • Mefloquine (Lariam)
  • Chloroquine with proguanil
  • Malarone
  • Doxycycline

A detailed risk assessment of your travel itinerary is required before we are able to advise you on the most appropriate anti-malarial prophylaxis. Please see our appointments section to book an appointment.
